Stories that Sparkle!
Learn the meaning behind the glitter.
"Mallow" by Liv Ash, 2024; pentaptych. $1,250. Designed as the centerpiece for The Wyvern Hotel in Punta Gorda, Florida, "Mallow" impresses. In the spirits of Rothko & O’Keefe, "Mallow" celebrates bold color & perspective. "Mallow" is the magnified dividing line of the hibiscus flower, Rose Mallow, where color changes from deep red to frothy pink. Tonight’s cocktail is named for the glittery effect of the flower's texture captured with sparkle.
"Breaching" by Liv Ash, 2024; 9’ x 36” triptych. $900 Third in The Wyvern Hotel series, "Breaching" plays with perspective. Like "Mallow", it was painted using only hands as brushes. "Breaching" invites the viewer to look within and ask, “Am I growing upward or sinking below?”
"Enveloped" by Liv Ash, 2021; 9’ x 48” triptych. $1,050 Second in The Wyvern Hotel series, and a counterbalance to "Mallow", "Enveloped" explores thought as movement. What do you see in the swirling lines?
"Elevated Thoughts" by Liv Ash, 2021; $450. An homage to Rothko, this piece beams with with bold color. "Poem Yellow" from my book, asks us to associate color with emotion: "The sweet smell of sunbaked heather soothes my weary soul. I weep. Not tears of sadness, but of unspoken grief breaching my heart, erupting with delighted relief into the expanse above."
"Dream Sequence: Sparking" by Liv Ash, 2023; $450. I had a dream (rare) & when I awoke, I bee-lined to the garage to paint. This piece is one of three in a series contemplating how an idea develops. First displayed at the Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda, Florida.
"Play" by Liv Ash, 2023; $450. Sometimes, a piece is reworked - many times. Such is the story of "Play." Her beginning was as the third & final piece in a series on how an idea develops. However, after a month on display, she was reworked & became herself: bolder, brazen, & sparkling. She "takes up space" & doesn't apologize for being playful. What do you see in her explosion of color? If she were in your space, how would you display her?
"Unfathomable" by Liv Ash & Ingrid Blount, 2021; NFS. My sister is also an abstract artist; we teamed up to create this piece for our show at Town Hall in Fishers, Indiana. Ingrid works in alcohol ink. Once she painted the central form, I completed it using only my hands to blend our approaches. This piece is based on an excerpt from Henry David Thoreau's book, Walden, 1854: "At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature."
"Menagerie" by Liv Ash, 2019; NFS. My first exploration into working with my hands, glitter, & scraping the canvas. Made on the back porch of the bungalow I rented while I studied for the Indiana bar, this painting is, quite literally, a diary of the energy swirling through me as I prepared for the test. I needed to "play" & balance the scales between the "letter of the law" & "colors of imagination."
